PlusSy and Language Barriers

Man, the things they come up with in other countries.... I think it's awesome that they have product names in english, or should I say..... engrish??! =O

Seriously, the lines that can stem from this drink:

  • "That was some good Plussy!"
  • "I need some Plussy tonight!"
  • "I had Plussy all day today."
  • "That Plussy's flat"
  • And of course: "100% Plussy juice".

I wonder what it tastes like.... A refreshing experience indeed. Ehhh?

Anyway, on to more important matters. So at school, a lady was distressed over the fact that her daughter did not make it into any big colleges for not having 2 years of a foreign language. In her case, it was spanish that her daughter failed. She rambled on and on about how Mexicans come to California in droves, and end up outnumbering the mass consumer base, and in effect "We" have to learn their language to further our careers. I mean, she was PISSED. If I can remember, her words were:

"If you go to Korea, they're not learning English and putting up millions of English-only signs for us. If you go to Mexico, they're not forcing themselves to learn English. Why do U.S.-born citizens have to compensate for their unwillingness to learn our language? It's absolutely unfair to lose a job opportunity to someone else, just because they know spanish. If you cross that fucking border, don't expect the other side to cater to YOUR needs".

Of course, there were those that sympathized with her, honestly, I did too. But sympathize =\= agree. Yeah, I can say that it sucks, but it's ridiculous to think like that. One girl was making some good points, about how that's what the U.S. is all about and how we welcome foreigners, so we have to host them.

Another thing though, and probably the most important, is that it isn't going to change shit, complaining that is. Your daughter failed, where many passed. And when it comes down to it, most of southern CA is spanish-speaking. As much as it sucks, for YOU, spanish is sticking around for good. And knowing the language, is pretty much a degree on your resumè, because like a degree, it's an enabler. And being in the workforce means satisfying the consumer.

Learning other languages to succeed, yay or nay? I say yay.
